Lord of Scoundrels is a retelling of the fairytale Beauty and the Beast, with the author stating that like the Beast, Dain is an outcast and misfit among his society. As with many of her stories, Chase made her heroine a strong female, deciding to model Jessica after the type of women who lived a few generations previously and who had "a more practical, frank attitude toward sex". The son of an English father and Italian mother, Dain is hardened due to a difficult childhood and meets his match in Jessica Trent, a 27-year-old bluestocking more than capable of trading wits with him.Ĭhase had a love for Italian culture, and decided that this background would provide ample motivation for Dain, being the product of his parents' inability to understand each other's cultures. Historical fiction is not a genre I’ve read much in, but this definitely makes me want to read more. This is how I came across Byzantium by Stephen Lawhead. When I meet someone new, I like to ask them for book recommendations. I’ll post detailed summaries/page notes there and write freely about my impressions on my blog. I’m also starting a habit of taking notes on the books I like and making them available at. Starting up this blog again! I’ll begin by writing about a few books I’ve read in the past few months that I’ve really enjoyed. One of the unread has been sitting in the pile next to my bed for – gosh – probably more than a year. Some on the list I had read, others I had heard of, some I had not. From 1001 to just 11? Were they really “essential”? What do you mean by “classic”? Do they deserve some of the time before I die? What a relief to learn that, on the literary front, Hachette has come up with a list of 11 “modern classics”, labelled Hachette Essentials, which it says will compete with the likes of Vintage and Penguin Modern Classics. My undergraduate copy of The Norton Anthology of English Literature (2582 featherlight pages) remains handy, mostly to help a high schooler with their homework. Next to the bed is 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die (balances out the classical stuff). On my bookshelf is 1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die (roughly one a week, although I’d better get a wriggle on). I’m a sucker for those lists of must-read books, must-listen-to music and must-see art – whatever I think might offer enlightenment, a gem of delight, or be useful for a pub quiz or Trivial Pursuit. And he certainly shouldn't be thinking of all the disreputable things he'd like to do to the impertinent scamp. He shouldn't be so beguiled by the charming young man who shows up on his doorstep asking for favors. One of Library Journal's Best Romances of 2018 Dropping out of art college, CeCe watches as Star, her beloved sister, distances herself to follow her new love, leaving her completely alone. Following the death of her father, the elusive billionaire Pa Salt – so-called by the six daughters he adopted from around the globe and named after the Seven Sisters star cluster – she finds herself at breaking point. When this one came up I was so excited, though disappointed that I missed one in the series, I was still super excited to jump back into the story of the seven sisters and find out what romance lay ahead.ĬeCe D’Aplièse has never felt she fitted in anywhere. Every story is unique and independent of the series as a whole, but that said they are all connected by central characters and other plot points, but again it’s not necessary to read them in order but it does help! That said, I don’t feel like I missed a whole lot by skipping around within the series. I simply must go back and read that one before the year is out and the next book comes out! I have been a huge fan of Lucina Riley’s novels for quite some time, although I think I missed one back in 2016, THE SHADOW SISTER, which makes me sad because I love her books. He’s a relative nice guy, friendly to most and wary as a prince must be. The handsome prince in question was the reason I had my doubts on the story, but as it pans out Prince Kai matures nicely. It’s a Cinderella story set in a post-apocalyptic future and the Cinderella in question is Cinder Linh the best mechanic in New Beijing who is also a… wait for it… cyborg! An interesting read? I most definitely think so!Ī describes the book thus. More appropriate comparisons would be The Host or Ender’s Game. However, the similarities regarding to plot are far and in-between, verging more onto archetypes, which could be said of any book. But in the end, I finished the book in a matter of days and ended up giving it 4/5 stars on Goodreads.Īs a disclaimer, I will say that if you like The Hunger Games, you will probably like The 5 th Wave due to the similar writing style and strong female protagonist. I bought the book from Barnes & Noble, skeptical after all the comparisons I’d heard to Hunger Games, not even really sure what it was about. Personally, I don’t think so, but I think the search has given way for the newfound popularity of The 5 th Wave by Rick Yancey. So what’s the next big thing? Is it aliens? But now we’re all growing weary of the totalitarian-themed fiction and all the B and C class knocks offs. The takeover of dystopia with The Hunger Games, which paved the way for Divergent.
